Or, ask the guy or gal in the correct department at your home improvement store for some tips. You might not need to shell out hundreds for a handyman to come over for a 15-minute job.

Utilize online groups in your community to buy and swap used items or even get things for free. If you can’t pay, perhaps you could go old school and trade or barter; you could always volunteer to babysit the kids outside for an hour or rake their leaves.

Embrace your inner grandma and save plastic and glass containers, bread bags, and shoeboxes to repurpose instead of buying new zip-top bags and storage containers. Folks who lived through the Great Depression found work wherever they could. Men might have to take jobs that were new to them, while women sought work outside the house for the first time as cleaning ladies or teachers. If you’ve been laid off from the restaurant, bar, gym, or wherever you were working, you can get creative to find paying gigs available now, from shopping for groceries for shut-ins to delivering packages for online retailers. You can save on your utilities bills by going for the manual option instead of the electric one. Do as the Depression Era housewives did and line dry your clothes instead of running the dryer and wash dishes by hand instead of running the dishwasher half empty. Turn down your heat a degree or two and pile on the sweaters and blankets. Walk or ride your bike to nearby errands and get some exercise while saving on gas and car maintenance. The little savings will add up.

“Get a job.” LOL!
We retired early and found insurance costs sky-high. We always ask for the senior discount. We water down our orange juice (tastes the same). We eat oatmeal (better for you), make our own smoothies by buying in bulk fruit at costco and freezing it. I started buying some generic brands (but still prefer name brands for some veggies). My husband is making our bread (super easy recipe, no kneeding required). We cancelled our tv provider and went with Amazon Prime (120 a yr vs 120 a month), which also gives us free shipping and builds up points for each purchase. We have a credit card for hotels that has one free anniversary night a year. Another gives us 5% back on different categories that change quarterly, like groceries, Target and Walmart, gas, etc and 3% on restaurants, pharmacies and another one gives us 5% on gas every day. We pay them off at the end of the month. Our insurance company gives us credit cards for points we’ve earned in their wellness challenges. We’ve used the first $75 one to pay two copays. We have a garden and get composted soil from a neighbor who raises cattle (we live in the country). I cut up and freeze green peppers to throw in soup and egg quiche, omelets etc. That’s quite a savings because peppers go bad quickly and are getting expensive. We use our grocery card points for gas discounts which when combined with our credit card discount can add up to a big difference per gallon. We have a camper and bought the national parks senior lifetime pass for $80. With it, we get into all BLM and National Parks and monuments. We can camp for 1/2 off. So for instancde this year we’re staying 4 days at a National Seashore for $44 TOTAL.
