Prom season is sneaking up, and if you’re a parent (or student) stressing about finding the perfect dress without draining your savings (or your wallet), you’re in the right place! Use this as your go-to guide for getting a stunning prom dress on the cheap—or even for free! (and yes – I’m totally serious!)
These tips will help reduce the cost of prom and get rid of some of the stress. Let’s dive in and get you dressed to impress—for less!
Thrift Stores and Consignment Shops
Thrift stores and consignment shops are the BEST places to get an amazing deal. You can score gently used (or sometimes brand-new!) dresses at literally 1/2 or more of the original cost. Think $20-$50 instead of $200+.
The trick? Start shopping early—hit these spots a few months before prom season to beat the rush and grab the best picks. Don’t be afraid to ask them when they start getting prom dress donations in – or if there is a certain time of year that they put them out.
Online Marketplaces
Online shopping has made scoring great deals a breeze! Sites like eBay, Poshmark, and Facebook Marketplace are packed with secondhand steals, all that you can do right from home.
You can find gorgeous dresses for crazy low prices—just be sure to check the seller’s ratings and ask for clear photos to make sure it’s in good shape. And NEVER agree to meet them anywhere unsafe. (In fact, meeting at the lobby of the police station is a GREAT idea—and most police stations don’t mind that happening!)
You might even be able to make an offer or haggle a bit to lower the cost.
Dress Swaps
Ever thought about swapping dresses instead of buying? Dress swap events let you trade an old formal dress for a “new” one—for free!
A lot of local schools or communities hold these events yearly – and they’re always super popular. (and if your town doesn’t have one, start one!)
Borrow from Friends or Family
Do you have an older sibling, cousin, or friend who’s already been to prom? Raid their closet! Borrowing a dress saves you cash and adds a sweet, sentimental vibe to your night.
Just be sure to remember that you’re borrowing it and make sure to take super good care of it during the process.
DIY and Upcycling
Who says you have to settle for a dress just like it looks? Turn an old dress into a prom masterpiece! You don’t need to be a pro— you can easily shorten a hem, add some sparkles, or dye it a bold new color. Find some fun and funky new (or used) shoes – and you’re done!
Tons of simple DIY tutorials online can walk you through it. Not a sewer? Recruit a crafty family member or friend to help.
Discount Retailers
Stores like TJ Maxx, Ross, and Marshalls are discount goldmines for formal wear. While they don’t “technically” market prom dresses, you’ll find some pretty fun dresses on the rack that you can make your own.
Just be prepared to act quickly, as their inventory fluctuates and changes quickly. You can even ask one of the workers what day they restock or receive shipments so that you know when to arrive for the best pick!
Prom Dress Drive
Did you know some organizations give away prom dresses for free? Groups like Becca’s Closet and Cinderella’s Closet collect dresses and hand them out to high schoolers in need.
Look for local dress drives, too—schools, churches, and community centers often host them. It’s an amazing way to score and feel good about a dress.
Finding a cheap or free prom dress doesn’t have to be a chore. Thrift, swap, borrow, or DIY—the options are endless. Start your hunt now, keep an open mind, and you might find a dress (and a story) you’ll never forget.
