If Colorado Springs is in the picture for your next corporate meeting or family vacation, here are five fabulous free things to do while you’re there. Since the area boasts 300 days of sunshine a year, chances are you’ll get to do most of these on a single visit.
Remember, this scenic city at the foot of America’s mountain – Pikes Peak – is at 6,000 feet in altitude. So take a day on the ground before you attempt anything too strenuous. Do NOT forget your camera.
Garden of the Gods
A city park worthy of national recognition, Garden of the Gods‘ stunning red sandstone eruptions, spires and hogbacks make a scenic setting for a leisurely (or not) stroll. Check in at the visitors’ center for advice on hikes, rock climbing, wildlife encounters and free programs. Don’t be surprised to encounter a group of Olympic cyclists out for a daily workout.
U.S. Air Force Academy
A national landmark military institution, the U.S. Air Force Academy is open to casual visitors. Drive through the grounds. Visit the architecturally remarkable interdenominational chapel. Stop at the museum and take a short nature hike.
Rocky Mountain Motorcycle Museum
The Rocky Mountain Motorcycle Museum just north of downtown Colorado Springs is home to more than 60 original and restored vintage and antique Indian, Harley-Davidson, Excelsior and other classic motorcycles. Check out the authentic period photographs and a wide display of motorcycle memorabilia.
Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum
Housed in the beautifully preserved 1903 El Paso County Courthouse, the Colorado Springs Pioneer Museum has both a permanent local history collection and fascinating rotating exhibits. But the real amazing museum piece is the building itself.
Penrose Heritage Museum
Formerly the El Pomar Carriage House Museum, the Penrose Heritage Museum is located in The Broadmoor hotel complex. This under-visited attraction was started in 1941 by the hotel’s founder and includes vehicles that carried local dignitaries and a few U.S. presidents, all dating from the early 20th century. A permanent Pikes Peak Hill Climb exhibit has just been added.
