There’s no need to go underground to find a good deal on a great sub. The popular sub shop Subway is everywhere, churning out its signature Footlong sandwiches at affordable prices. Limited-time and daily Subway specials and deals have made the sandwich shop a favorite with bargain hunters and frugal families. It’s the perfect place to grab a quick (and somewhat healthy) bite without breaking the bank.
While the fast-food industry is dominated by burgers and chicken, Subway stands out for its menu of sub sandwiches and salads. Customers create their own custom sub from a wide variety of meats, cheeses, veggies and condiments, with more than 38 million different sandwich combinations possible.
The sub shop is also known for slathering on the savings – including Subway’s coupons, twofer offers and sub of the day specials. As there are many ways to find discounts, hungry folks should read this guide to the top Subway deals and specials so taking a bite of delicious sandwich does not take a bite out of your budget.
Subway deals and specials
Subway is known for offering coupons, daily specials and sub-of-the-day deals that make your mouth and wallet happy. Here are some of the top ways to save.
Subway Sub of the Day
One of the chain’s most popular specials is its Sub of the Day – get a specific sandwich each day of the week at a low-price. (The price is often around $2.99 for the 6-inch sub.) However, the timing of this Subway daily special is unpredictable and, when it is available, price, participation and selection will vary significantly by location. Check with your neighborhood Subway to see if they’re currently offering Sub of the Day specials.
Subway BOGO
When Subway offers a BOGO, it’s usually for buy-two-get-one or buy-one-get-one FREE Footlong subs. The discount typically requires a coupon or is only available via online ordering. Check the chain’s social media accounts for announcements as to when a Subway BOGO deal is available.
Subway $5 Footlong
This was the deal that really took Subway to the next level. Customers could get any Footlong sub for just $5; they’re regularly priced at $7 or $8. (The chain’s premium subs were also available at an additional upcharge – usually an extra buck or two.) The offer ran for years, but has been on-again, off-again in recent times.
In the most recent version of the deal, customers could get a Footlong for $5, but the offer required the purchase of two subs – two Footlongs for $10. The discount also required a coupon or online promo code.
Check Subway’s social media accounts for announcements as to when the $5 Footlong offer is available again.
Subway coupons
Subway is one of the few restaurants that still offers paper coupons. Subway coupons are usually issued every four to six weeks and can be found in many newspapers on Wednesdays or Sundays. You may also receive them in the mail, so don’t be so quick to toss out that “junk mail.”
Even better, you can sign-up for weekly text coupons with your smartphone. It’s the easiest and quickest way to find online coupons for Subway. Just for signing up, you’ll receive a coupon good for a 6-inch sub for $2.99. You can also download the Subway app and check under “Deals” for current discounts and coupons. App users may also receive periodic mobile-specific offers.
Subway MyWay Rewards Club
Subway offers a loyalty club for its most devoted customers called Subway MyWay Rewards. Members earn four tokens for every dollar spent on food and beverages. When you reach 200 tokens, you’ll get a $2 reward coupon for use on a future order. (If you do the math, members have to spend $50 to earn a reward.)
Customers can also get Surprise Rewards at any time. However, the more you visit, the more likely you are to get additional Subway deal offers.
You can sign up for Subway MyWay Rewards at no cost via the Subway app or by registering a Subway gift card online.
More deals at Subway
The biggest challenge in finding deals at Subway is that all locations are franchised. As a result, price and participation will always vary by location. Even national promos may not be available at select locations if the owner chooses not to participate.
The best Subway hack is to become a regular at your local shop so you’re always “in the know” about your Subway’s specials, deals and discounts. Alternatively, check the chain’s social media accounts for current deals or coupons.
One lesser-known Subway deal that’s generally available is the survey offer. When you pay at Subway, be sure to get a receipt. It will have the URL of a survey page and a code to enter to prove that you really ate at the restaurant.
You have five days from the date of your visit to take the survey. On completion, you’ll get a “Subprise” (as the chain likes to call it) offer. Just handwrite the offer code on the receipt and redeem it at a participating location within five days of taking the survey. The Subway coupon you get will vary and you may have to purchase a sub or salad in order to use the offer code.
Fine print
Because all locations are franchised, price, promotions and participation vary widely – even, at times, within the same market. Just because one Subway location offers a specific special or accepts a particular coupon doesn’t mean the location a few miles away will offer or do the same. It’s wise to call ahead if you’re trying to access a specific Subway special.
Subway app
Just like every other restaurant chain, Subway offers an app with lots of benefits and perks. Most of all, the Subway app offers convenience and savings, including the following:
- Save time and order ahead for pick-up inside the restaurant or via contactless curbside pick-up. Subway does not offer direct delivery. If you want your sandwiches delivered, you need to use a third-party delivery service, like DoorDash or Uber Eats.
- Customize your favorite sub with just a few swipes. And, then, keep it on file for easy re-ordering. You can even name your sub.
- No need to fumble or search for your wallet – just scan to pay. Pay with a pre-loaded Subway gift card or credit card on the app. (Unfortunately, there is no option of ordering online and paying in cash at the shop.)
- With the app, you will automatically become a Subway MyWay Rewards members and earn tokens on all qualifying purchases. Plus, get exclusive offers, surprise rewards and more.
Best of all, you’ll never miss the chance to save money because all of the current Subway deals available will be right in the palm of your hand.
Subway menu
The Subway menu focuses on subs, sandwich wraps and salads made from a wide variety of deli meats, cheeses, veggies and condiments. They also recently introduced Protein Bowls. Subway doesn’t offer a standard value menu, as other chains do. Its 6-inch subs cost around $5 to $6 and Footlongs are $7 to $8.
The key to Subway’s menu is that customers can pick a basic sandwich type and then customize it with your choice of toppings. Sub lovers can watch their sandwich being made right in front of them, and ask for double meat, no cheese or extra mayo, and pick the veggies and sauces to go inside.
Subway menu options
The chain offers its standard longtime line-up of sandwiches, including Black Forest Ham, Buffalo Chicken, Chicken & Bacon Ranch, Cold Cut Combo, Italian B.M.T., Meatball Marinara, Oven Roasted Chicken, Spicy Italian, Steak & Cheese, Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki, Tuna, Turkey Breast and Veggie Delite.
The bread choices include Hearty Italian, 9-Grain Honey Oat, Jalapeño Cheese, Monterey Cheddar, Parmesan Oregano, Roasted Garlic, Rosemary & Sea Salt and Rye Bread. (Gluten-free bread may also be available.) Subway bakes most of its breads in-restaurant every day.
Plus, if you’re looking for a hot lunch, you have the option of getting your sub toasted.
Many customers don’t know that, at select locations, the Subway menu also includes breakfast. The chain’s breakfast sandwiches are made with flatbread and the choices include Bacon, Egg & Cheese; Black Forest Ham, Egg & Cheese; Steak, Egg & Cheese; and Egg & Cheese. Locations that serve breakfast open early – usually around 8 a.m.
What are the best sandwiches on the Subway menu?
Everyone has their favorites, and the most popular subs vary by city and region. However, the Chicken & Bacon Ranch, Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki and Spicy Italian regularly show up on many top 10 lists.
Is the Subway Footlong actually 12 inches?
Finally, if you’re talking about Subway, you have to ask, “Is the Footlong really 12 inches?” It’s a tricky answer because the actual measurement created a legal issue for the chain back in 2013. A series of lawsuits from customers claimed the “footlong” sub was often falling an inch or so short.
After all the legal wrangling, customers can now rest assured the chain has implemented quality control measures to ensure customers are getting the sandwich as advertised – a full 12 inches.
