Any way you slice it, National Pie Day is big day for pie lovers. And who doesn’t love pie, whether it’s sweet or savory?
No one knows why it took until the 1970s for someone to declare a national celebration of one of the world’s favorite desserts. That’s when nuclear engineer Charlie Papazian declared his own birthday, January 23, to be National Pie Day — a day to honor and enjoy pie of all kinds. Note that National Pie Day is not the same as National Pi Day, which has its own day of recognition on March 14.
Hungry for more pie history? The Romans take credit for the first pie — made with goat cheese and honey. Over time, bakers all over the globe have improved upon that first recipe. Now, you can enjoy pies of all kinds, sizes and tastes (including varying types of crusts), whether fresh from a home oven or neighborhood bakery.

Perkins Restaurant and Bakery – Every week, the eatery hosts Pie Society Monday. On Mondays, enjoy a FREE slice of pie with the purchase of an entrée, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Shari’s – Join the restaurant’s loyalty club Shari’s Rewards and get a FREE slice of pie just for signing up. Plus, enjoy another slice on your birthday. Even better, when you purchase 12 whole pies, get the next one on the house.
Village Inn – One of the most popular and well-known places for a variety of different standard and seasonal pies is Village Inn. Get $2 off any whole pie in-store at participating locations, while supplies last — from Jan. 22 to 24. (The discount excludes cheesecake and carrot cake.) No coupon required for the sweet savings – just ask the cashier at checkout.
In addition, the popular diner host Free Pie Wednesday every week. On Wednesdays, enjoy a FREE slice of select pies with the purchase of a dine-in entrée. The crusty offer is available from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
