Whether you’re looking for decorating ideas for your home, camping how-tos or scrapbooking techniques, you’ve got quite a few ways to try something new on the cheap. During hands-on craft events and expert-led workshops at major retailers, you can participate in jewelry-making demos, find out how to cook for a crowd or over an open fire, create-your-own card and more. Even better: The events are FREE or require only a small fee, giving you the chance to try before you buy the supplies to tackle the projects on your own. Days and times may vary by location and some events may require an RSVP, so check with the store nearest you before you head out.
Here’s a sampling of the events:
- Michaels: Every couple of months, Michaels offers free and cheap craft events and demos for adults.
- Pottery Barn: Once or twice each month, Pottery Barn offers free workshops about everything from decorating the living room to arranging flowers. Plus, you can arrange for a free consultation with a Pottery Barn Design Studio Specialist, in store or in your home, to get advice on everything from updating a room to decorating your house.
- Bass Pro Shops: Whether you’re interested in boating or hunting, Bass Pro Shops periodically offers a mix of how-to classes for adults.
- Williams-Sonoma: On Sundays, Williams-Sonoma offers free cooking and technique classes.

Thank you. What about online? I live in the boonies far away from those stores.

Hi, Ruth. Keep an eye on Living on the Cheap’s Home & Garden page. We’ll be posting ideas for free & cheap crafts there. Earlier this month, we posted about turning old magazines into cool bowls, and I’m sure we’ll be including other fun pieces about entertaining & decorating on a budget. Thanks for reading Living on the Cheap!
