Like Butterball’s, your pet’s nose is probably amazing. It’s up to you, however, to ferret out the deals on treats, toys and other pet supplies. Most major pet store chains offer price matching and some accept competitors’ coupons, as well as manufacturers’ coupons, which can help you save money on pet food and other items. Plus, they offer deals to members of their loyalty programs, which are free to join.
Here are details on how to save money at pet stores
Price matching
PetSupermarket, Petco and PetSmart representatives say their stores match lower prices of identical items available at other local retailers. To match a lower price from another store, supply the staff with a receipt, advertisement or sales flyer as proof of the price. If that’s not available, the manager may agree to phone the other store to verify a lower price. Typically, price-matching policies exclude lower prices offered by websites or online vendors. PetSmart does match PetSmart.com prices when requested in United States and Canada, a spokesman said. Usually, prices online are about the same as in stores, with some regional differences.
Competitors’ coupons
PetSmart and PetSupermarket accept competitors’ coupons for merchandise, if the coupon is valid and for the exact item.
PetSmart’s website features the stores’ policies regarding coupons, including the policies for redeeming competitors’ coupons:
- The coupon must be for the exact item.
- It can be for a dollar amount off or a percentage off.
- Buy one, get one free (BOGO) coupons are accepted.
- The coupon must have a valid expiration date.
- The coupon must have a scannable barcode.
Petco customer service representatives say their stores do not accept competitors’ coupons.
Rewards programs
Rewards progams vary, but generally offer access to extra discounts and coupons. The programs are FREE to join, usually by signing up in stores or online. Here are the three major program:
PetSupermarket VIP (Very Important Pet) program: With purchase of 10 bags or cases of the same brand of dog or cat food, you receive a voucher for a FREE bag or case of the same brand.
PetSmart PetPerks: Members are sent coupons based on their previous purchases. Also members are eligible for in-store discounts on select items.
Petco: Rewards program offers $5 vouchers by email for each $100 worth of purchases made online, in stores or both.
Check your favorite pet store’s Facebook page. Some, including PetSmart’s Facebook page, feature deals and coupons.
Note: Most discount programs are only for merchandise. Generally, services, such as pet grooming and purchase of live animals are not part of these deals.
