Like everybody else, I plug in my electronics wherever I can. My smartphone gets a corner of the dining room table, where they share space with yesterday’s mail and whatever junk I haven’t gotten around to putting away. When I expect guests, I crawl under the table, unplug my devices and stash them somewhere in the bedroom.
When I was asked to try an Echogear product, I immediately offered to try the Outlet Shelf. Now I could get my cellphone off the table and keep it at eye level in the kitchen, off the counter to avoid the danger of getting wet from countertop spills.
The shelf was incredibly easy to install. Tools required: regular screwdriver. Time: Less than five minutes, even with stopping to take photos.
You just unscrew the plate covering your electrical outlet, hold the shelf in place and then screw in the plate that comes with the shelf. You actually get two plates, one that replaces the square GFI outlet covers and one that replaces the regular size covers. There is even an opening in the plastic shelf for the phone cord! This would also be great in the bathroom for an electric toothbrush or razor.
Now my phone is at eye level on the kitchen counter. The cats can’t sit on it any more, either.
The Outlet Shelf sells for $14.99 on Amazon. It qualifies for free shipping for Amazon Prime customers, and it can be combined with other Amazon purchases to reach the $35 free shipping threshold for non-Prime customers.
Echogear sells TV mounts, tech accessories such as surge protectors and cables, plus wall-mounting shelves for TV cable boxes and DVD players. Echogear caters to customers who don’t consider themselves tech experts but just want to set up their mounts or surge protectors (or outlet shelves) and get on with their lives.
The company also has another product I’d like to try: a slim wall-mount surge protector that includes outlets for USB ports. With that, I could charge my auxiliary power packs at the same time I am charging my phone.
But right now, I’m ready to get back to my life. I can hear my phone buzzing in the kitchen with details of tonight’s karaoke outing.
