Your financial fortunes are in the stars. Or at least you can check your horoscope for some financial advice.

Capricorn, Dec. 22-Jan. 19. Revealing your feelings makes you feel good. Consider explaining to your mobile phone provider why you need a better deal. Even a 10% price cut could make a big difference over the 12-month contract period.

Aquarius, Jan. 20-Feb. 18. You’re addicted to television, even though you can’t afford that huge cable bill every month. Cut the cable and go for an antenna. The Leaf Plus by Mohu gets top billing from many technology and TV critics. You can check here to see which channels you’ll be able to watch with Leaf Plus at absolutely no charge.

Pisces, Feb. 19-March 20. If you’re one of those fishy types, think about grabbing a pole, some line and a little bait and heading down to the river or out to the lake. Fishing is one sport where you absolutely don’t have to go into training to come up a winner. Not only is fishing fun, but you also get to eat your trophy. Here’s a primer for novices and those who need a brush-up.

Aries, March 21-April 19. Aries is the most physical sign, which is a good reason to get a second job doing something active. Build your retirement account by saving what you make working part time as a gardener, an exercise instructor or something else that keeps you off the couch.

Taurus, April 20-May 20. You insist on safety, so consider this. Religiously putting 10% of each paycheck into your 401(k) or other savings account will go a long way toward helping you save enough to retire comfortably at 65 — or before — without fear of running out of money.

Gemini, May 21-June 21. Geminis love to talk on the phone. Make talk cheap by checking out month-to-month mobile phone deals. There’s no contract, so if you change your mind, you can move on without penalty. Plans offered by several companies offer all the talk, text and data you want for about $50. In addition Boost Mobile offers something called “Shrinkage.” The bills go down a little every month you pay on time.

Cancer, June 22-July 22. Cancer is the most romantic sign, so show a little love to life’s most constant companion — your automobile. Change the oil, rotate the tires, give it a scrub when it’s dirty. Treat your car well and this could be the most reliable and cost-effective relationship you have.

Leo, July 23-Aug 22. Once Leos commit, there is no turning back. That’s a particularly good trait when it comes to paying off debt. Paying the bills on time every month will make your credit rating shine and save you thousands over the course of a lifetime.

Virgo, Aug. 23-Sept. 22. Everybody knows that Virgos can be fussy, which isn’t always a bad thing. Sometimes being picky pays off. For instance, taking lunch and a jug of coffee to work every day will protect you from lousy food and save you beaucoup bucks compared to buying Starbucks and a deli salad to go.

Libra, Sept. 23-Oct. 22. Poor Libra isn’t always lucky in love, which is too bad because marrying — and staying married — is a good route to a lifetime of financial stability. A study at the Human Resource Research Center at Ohio State University found that someone who marries — and stays married — accumulates nearly twice as much personal wealth as a person who is single or divorced.

Scorpio, Oct. 23-Nov. 21. Money is important to you. One way to make sure you have plenty of it is to make a budget and stick to it. It isn’t a glamorous approach, but it works.

Sagittarius, Nov. 22-Dec. 21. Sagittarians believe anything can happen, which is true and why they and everyone else need insurance. Shop for it wisely. Understand what you’re buying and don’t pay any more than you need to. If you’re as lucky as you think you are, you’ll never need it.

Jennie Phipps

Jennie Phipps is a veteran journalist and cheapskate. She writes: “My kids used to have a running competition with my friend Jean’s kids for the right to boast that they had the World’s Cheapest Mom. I thought that was an exaggeration. I’m not cheap — I’m frugal. I like to spend my money well. Phipps spent 25 years in the newspaper business, the last 10 as the top editor of mid-size newspapers. For the last 16, she’s been a freelance word-wrangler and publisher of Freelance Success, a subscription newsletter and online community for independent writers and editors intent on making a good living from their businesses.
