Small Business Saturday is an initiative from American Express to encourage shopping in local brick and mortar stores. American Express customers can get a $25 credit on their cards when they shop at a local store with their American Express card on Saturday, November 24, 2012. Here’s how it works. Starting November 18, register your American Express card with Small Business Saturday. Only a limited number of cards can be registered, so make sure to take care of this first thing November 18. Last year AmEx did meet its limit.
Then, on Saturday, November 24, shop at a local small business that has registered for this program, spend at least $25 in one transaction, and pay with your American Express card. In about eight weeks you’ll find a $25 credit on your card.
There are two ways to find local participating businesses. Enter your city name or zip code on the Small Business Saturday map. Small businesses that accept American Express payment through The Square also qualify but may not appear on the Small Business Saturday map. You can find them through The Square Directory.
I participated last year and it worked like a charm. You don’t have to do anything special when you’re shopping except use the American Express card that you registered.
