Every year since the late 1970s, the Sunday after Labor Day has been set aside as National Grandparents Day. This Sunday, September 9, you  can save money, take advantage of freebies, and get creative to honor grandparents on National Grandparents Day.  Below are a few nationwide freebies, special deals and events to make Grandparents Day free or cheap – – and fun.

We’ve also rounded up some coupons and deals that aren’t specific to Grandparents Day but are good this weekend if you want to treat Grandma and Grandpa.

Old Spaghetti Factory is giving Grandma and Grandpa a free meal in honor of Grandparents Day. When you purchase an entree, Nana or Papa gets a free meal at lunch or dinner September 9. It’s all about family at Old Spaghetti Factory. You’ll want to check with your local Old Spaghetti Factory for times. Some locations have lunch hours only.

At Mimi’s Cafe, you can get two meals for the price of one this week. The buy-one-get-one Mimi’s Cafe deal is good through September 9. Why not take that special grandparent out for a meal, and get yours free? The deal is already in effect, so you could go any day at a time that’s convenient and maybe less busy than Grandparents Day. A few menu restrictions apply, and you must print out this Mimi’s Café coupon to get the FREE meal.

The heat is on this summer. At Dairy Queen, grandchildren and grandparents will enjoy cooling off with a Blizzard for 99 cents when you buy one at regular price (of equal or lesser value). The deal is good any day through September 30, with no need for a coupon, at participating locations nationwide.

White Castle helps you celebrate Grandparents Day with a special four sliders for $1 deal when a grandparent makes a purchase for a grandchild. You’ll need the White Castle coupon, which is good only September 9.

Take 20% off at TGI Friday’s with a printed coupon you can access through the August 30 post on TGI Friday’s facebook page. The TGI Friday’s coupon is good through September 17, valid on regular priced items only, and excludes alcoholic beverages. See coupon for details. However, since each coupon can be used only once, the only way to get a valid coupon is to scroll down the Facebook page until you see the link. Once you get it, you can also forward coupons to your friends.

Have a grandparent or two that like hot dogs . . . or pastrami?  Wienerschnitzel is offering $1 off coupon on its pastrami sandwich. Print the coupon from the Wienerschnitzel facebook page. You’ll need to click the “coupons” link at the top of the page.  The Wienerschnitzel coupon is good through the end of 2012.

Celebrate Grandparents Day with a free starter at P.F. Chang’s (with the purchase of an entrée). Click “get offer,” and you will receive the P.F. Chang’s coupon for a free appetizer at the email associated with your facebook account. The coupon is good through September 30, 2012.

Begin celebrating and preparing early with week-long free activities and events for National Grandparents Day at Pottery Barn stores. A letter-writing station will be available all week for the kids to jot a note to Gram or Gramps. Special presentations take place at local stores, and all events are free.

Grandparents like pictures, and a personalized frame made by a grandchild can be an inexpensive and cherished gift. Find out what you need and how to make a Grandparents Day frame craft at Michaels. The store is putting on a make it and take it event on Saturday to create the grandparents’ day frame. Instruction is free, but you have to buy a plain wooden frame.

Need to honor grandparents long distance? Brighten an email box with a free Grandparents Day e-card from American Greetings.

Freebies, deals and special National Grandparents Day events are scheduled in cities all over the nation. Train rides, free museum entry and free zoo admission, are among the local deals. Be sure to check out the Living on the Cheap network to locate an On the Cheap site for your area, then click through to find local Grandparents Day freebies, deals and events.
