Many cruise lines offer discounts on select cruises for military personnel. Princess offers an onboard credit of $50 and up, depending on the length of the cruise. Norwegian Cruise Lines offers discounts on as many as 100 cruises at any given time.

Several online booking sites, including American Discount Cruises, list the cruise lines that offer deals, along with appropriate links. While it’s a good idea to check what’s available online, it’s best to do the actual booking with a travel agent who specializes in cruises — and who can give advice and possibly even secure a better deal. (Travel agent commissions are paid by the cruise line, so they cost the consumer nothing.)

Discounts are available for personnel on active duty, in the National Guard or in the Reserves. Surviving spouses may be eligible, as may retired military and those who served previously and were honorably discharged.

Some cruise lines also offer discounts for police, firefighters and, occasionally, for school teachers. Again, these may be checked online and booked by a specialist travel agent.
